Senior - Quentin Slama

I've known the family Slama for as far back as I can remember! Being asked to do Quentin's senior pictures was exciting for me as I've known all the kids since I went to school with them.

I was actually really good friends with Quentin's older sister Sam through high school, I was a year above his brother Dillon and I knew that they had a younger brother, Quentin, but I really didn't know a whole lot about him since there was such a huge age gap between us.

That means I just needed to get to know Quentin at his session!

I remember the first time we got together he was full of smiles, full of laughter, full of life. One of the first questions he asked me was if I enjoyed what I was doing. Uh, of course! Then I asked him about college and we were talking about his plans but what I got next, I never expected. He flipped the question and asked ME what I went to college for. I quickly answered I have two college degrees, an Ag Degree and also an Insurance Degree. He's smart on the draw, because his reply, well you're not using either. Yes, that's totally true I couldn't disagree with it. So he smiles and tells his mom that I'm not using my degrees so it really doesn't matter if he gets one right?! See! This kids smart I tell ya.

After that, we clicked. We laughed the entire session. I can distinctly recall heading out to their farm and he was always trying to freak me out by the pond, (I hate frogs) so he was always throwing rocks around. Silly, hilarious guy!

Thank you again Quentin, and the entire Slama family for allowing me to capture such precious memories. Your family is extremely strong and I am so blessed to have gotten to know you guys throughout the years.

Lessons Learned: Expect the unexpected and just roll with it! At one point we had his cat jump up into the tree and lay down and practically pose himself! I laughed incredibly hard and I was there to capture it. Of course you have to throw those pictures into the final edits because they're so candid and funny!

Senior - Danielle Erickson

Getting a phone call asking if this is Dirt Road Photography was hands down my favorite milestone in my business! It was the first time I had someone contact me and ask by that name when I answered the phone! Super exciting stuff :)

When Danielle contacted me and was interested in a session out here on the farm I was excited. I've never had a senior from Lincoln want to come out and have fun here on the farm so I knew the girl had to be fun from the start.

We talked about what she wanted from her session, all of the specific stylized ideas we both had and the overall theme and I knew this was going to be fun. A country girl who wasn't scared of getting dirty and ready to embrace the great outdoors was my kinda gal! What I was surprised about when she arrived was that she was absolutely stunning. Gorgeous and so kind is a perfect personality along with a smile that can knock anyone out? Sounds perfect to me!!

I was really wanting to go outside of my comfort thing and try new poses and Danielle was all about it! I seriously loved how ok she was with trying lots of fun stuff. At one point, she decided she wanted to even climb a tree!? I agreed but made her promise to be extra careful. ;)

Thank you again Danielle, you're totally awesome and I'm so grateful you taught me more about cheering and how sports teams work in Lincoln schools. You're an amazing woman and I cannot wait to continue to follow your journey, good luck in your future plans and continue to keep smiling. You're beautiful!

Be ready to just go! Stop focusing on specific poses and just roll with it. If something looks unnatural just scrap it and move on. Sometimes the best photos are the unplanned and unposed ones!

Six Months - Makayla Aleece

I love that I get to watch Miss Makayla grow and capture her milestone months!

When Jill asked if I'd be willing to do Makayla's six month shots I was not only thrilled but also excited to think that she loved my work enough to ask me to continue to do Makayla's shots and get to catch up on how the family is doing!

Just in the past three months the little cutie has learned to sit up, is learning to be more patient and loves to play with mirrors! We've also learned that she is now wanting to be more independent and doesn't like laying down if others are playing around her.

Since I've known Jill and the boys before I even really knew them (our dad's played in polka bands together before we were even born!) it's always nice seeing what they're up to. I absolutely adore her style and LOVE her house, I may just hire her to come decorate for me someday ;)

Thank you again John and Jill for allowing me to capture these precious details that your little girl will soon grow out of. It's just so much fun catching up and watching her grow. She's such a smart and happy little girl!

The lesson learned was to make sure to bring your best friend as your secret weapon to help the little's smile! We could not for the life of us get Makayla to have fun and laugh about all the crazy fun we were having but the minute Maureen got there she was all about the smiles and charm! Also, funny faces are 110% proved to get smiles. You may look crazy but you can be guaranteed a few smiles :)
